SMS

Random eh?! Ya, why is this posted up you may be wondering. Well, it was during my tuition on Monday that this thing came to me. I pondered and pondered and so, decided to share what i've thought off.

As you can see, or perhaps it happened to you personally that the short messaging service (SMS) has marked effect on our culture, interaction, and attitudes within society. Be it the youth, or adults. Unlike the past, arrange an outing beforehand is no longer needed as sms is instantaneous, does it ring your bell? :) People are now no longer as difficult to reach as before, and so a simple sms message is often enough to arrange a physical meeting and a night out with friends.

One social impact that sms has on the society is that there is now a change of language among the sms users. Due to the inherent limitations of 160 characters per sms, there is a need for abbreviations or short-forms to save space. Sending messages like "see you tonight at 8.30p.m" could be replaced by "c u 2nite 8.30". Spelling out the entire word would take up more space such that more than one message would need to be sent, increasing the cost of sending. Hence short forms have evolved to make sms more efficient, less time consuming and cheaper. No doubt it leaves negative impact towards language and grammar. Punctuations are no more playing a role hence it leads to many miscommunication.

Students who are use to it may unconsciously carry on with the usage of short forms, and the consequence, "ah beng, what are all these single letter word doing in your paper? YOU FAIL!"

opps :D

p/s: do you have any funny short forms that you've came across? you're most welcome to share it at the comment box :)
